LESSON 5
No Meat on Monday
Do you like hamburgers? Did you know producing one hamburger takes a lot of water? Thirty bathtubs of water, in fact. That means eating just one hamburger could lead to serious environmental problems. In order to help save the Earth, Paul McCartney and his daughters Mary and Stella started a Meat Free Monday campaign in the U.K. in 2009.
The goal of this campaign is to get people to avoid eating meat at least one day a week. For example, like the McCartneys, you could stay away from beef or pork only on Meat Free Monday. It has gradually come to be accepted all over the world. Today, every school in New York City offers a meatless lunch on Monday. More and more people are starting to think about the effects of eating meat.
It takes a lot of water to produce meat, especially beef. About 12,000 tons of water are required to raise one cow. We should not ignore the fact that freshwater is limited. Moreover, cows emit methane, which is one of the major causes of the greenhouse effect. Livestock farming affects our environment. It is time to reconsider our eating habits for our planet.
